Rent a room in Toronto

(Revised by Joseph)

I am a newcomer. I landed Canada with my family on the evening of May 27, 2010.
With the help of my friend, we settled. We lived in my friend's house. Every day, she accompanied us to visite everywhere with driving her Honda Accord.
Three weeks later, my wife and son wanted to go back to Singapore. I had to stay in Canada. So I must find a new place to rent in Toronto .

Thanks to the Internet, I searched the Website and found a room on Cherokee Blvd.
I called the owner, and made a appointment. Our friend, my wife's classmate drove us to the house. The owner were very nice. They were also of Chinese descent.
They asked me to show my passport and Immgration paper. After they had a look, they said "Ok, let's view your room. It's upstair. Follow us. We climbed up to the second floor. It was a small bright and clean room with bed  table, TV and Internet line. The window faces the south. There was a big vegetable garden outside. We were north of Finch.  It was very convenient to ride the TTC bus.

Then they let us to the kitchen and told me where my closet was and how to place my food in the refrigerator.

Fortunately,  they didn't have pets.

Later, we talked about the price and the contract. It went very smoothly.

I moved in soon after, and have been in Cherokee-Finch till now.

The Snooze News

Connie: Good morning! This is ConnieSung, bring you' Here's to Your Health,'

a program about modern health issues.

Today,we've invited Dr. Ray Thorpe to talk to us about insomnia

Dr.Thorpe is the director of the Sleep Disorders Clinic.Welcome to the show!

Dr.Thorpe: Thanks,Connie,It's great to be here.

Connie: Your book Night Shift will be coming out soon.In it,you tell people to pay more attention to

sleep disorders. What is the big deal about losing a little sleep?

Dr.Thorpe: I always tell people to think of the biggest industrial disaster that they've ever heard about .

Usually it was caused at least in part by sleep deprivation. Then I ask them to think about

what can happen if they drive when they're tired. Every year,up to 200,000

automobile accidents aer caused by drowsy drivers.

Connie: Wow! That is a big problem.

Dr.Thorpe: And a costly one . We figure that fatigue costs businesses about $70million a year.

Connie: That's astounding! But getting back to the personal level,If I come to your clinic,

What would you advise me to do?

Dr.Thorpe: First,I would find out about some of your habits. If you smoked or drank,

I would tell you to stop.

Connie: Really? A lot of people have a drink to relax.

Dr.Thorpe: Bad idea, Both habits are not only bad for your general health ,but they interfere with sleep.

Connie: What about the old-fashioned remedies like warm milk?

Dr.Thorpe: Actually, a lot of home remedies do make sense. We tell patients

to have a high-carbohydrate snack like a banana before they go to bed.

Warm milk helps too.But I'd advise you not to

eat a heavy meal before bed.

Connie: My doctor told me to get more exercise, but when I run at night . I can't get to sleep.

Dr.Thorpe: It is true that if you exercise regularly. you 'll sleep better. But we always tell patients not to

within three hours of bedtime.

Connie: My mother always said to get up and scrub the floor when I couldn't sleep.

Dr.Thorpe: That works. I advised one patient to balance his checkbook.

He went right to sleep, just to escape from the task.

Connie: Suppose I try these remedies, and they don't help?

Dr.Thorpe: We often ask patients to spend a night at our sleep clinic. We have electronic equipment

that permits us to monitor the patient through the night.

In fact, if you're interested, we can invite you to come to the clinic for a night.

Connie: Maybe I should do that.

THE SMART SHOPPER

Dear Smart Shopper,
I'm a jewelry lover, and I enjoy shopping on line. Unfortunately,I just bought a pair of gold earrings that I don't like. When I  tried to return them,I learned that the seller has a no-return-policy.Don't I have the right to get a refund?
                                                                                        Mad  Madelyn

Dear Mad Madelyn:
If the merchandise is  defective, the seller must return your money or make an exchange. However,if the merchandise was in good condition when you received it, and if retailer has a no-return-policy,there is nothing you can do.This is true for store purchases as well as internet purchases. In the future, here are some questions you should ask before you buy anything:
  • Does the seller say "satisfaction guaranteed or your money back"?
  • Is there a time limit on returns, such as two weeks?
  • Who pays the shipping costs on items that are return?
  • Do you need to return the merchandise in its original package?
  • Is the original receipt required?
  • Does the retailer give a store credit instead of a cash refund?
  • If the retailer has a store in your area, can you return the merchandise to the store instead of shipping it?
Next time, find the return policy on the merchant's Web site and print it,or ask the merchant for the return policy in writing ,It's important to get all the facts that  you need before you buy!
