ESSAY: SUCCESS

(Revised by Sharon)

Everyone, who lives in the world, enjoys success. They want to be successful even if it is only a dream. In order to be successful, they must work hard. Some people even do unethical things for their success. Some people sacrifice the respect of humans, even become a criminal. But, what is success? What kind of people can be regarded as successful? It must be answered by a successful man! According to my succeed experience, it is: Success is many more things than just money or wealthy. It includes a healthy body, a harmonious family, and an important higher level social position.

A successful person must have a healthy body! It is compulsory and prerequisite. If he needs to take more medicine or inject medicine every day, although he has a lot of money, he couldn't feel happiness at all. Zhaogang, a former leader of the Bank of Communication, Harbin branch, China, has had diabetes for two dozens years. Although many staffs give him brides, the time that he lives in hospital is more than the time that he lives at home. How miserable he is. He would rather to have a healthy body than having money.

Secondly, a successful person must have a harmonious family. The harmonious family is as follow: healthy parents, loyal spouse, upright children. Zhaogang fails in these area. His wife has several adulterers because of his illness, he has Erectile Dysfunction for nearly 20 years. His daughter, nobody knows if she is of his descent, doesn't study well and can't be enrolled by any University or College even spent much more money. She is involved drugs and abortion. There are many scandals with his family. He couldn't think he is successful.

Thirdly, a successful one must have an important higher level social position. As above, Zhaogang receives much more money from staff before he promotes them. His wife and daughter always make scandals. He has the worst portrait in the public eye. The citizens of Harbin, who know him, all treat him as despicable. Although he has been the manager of a bank, although he has had many toadies around him, he has no position in the society.

All in all, everyone has his standard of success. Maybe, people will disagree. People have different opinion. I still want to say that success is many more things than just money or wealthy. It includes a healthy body, a harmonious family and a higher social position. They are the most important elements for a successful man.

Fabulous Presentation

On Oct. 26th, we had two excellent presentations in the class of LINC 4-5, MicroSkills, which were given by Mr. Philemon and Miss Zumurod.

The first presentation was given by Philemon. His topic was about women's responsibility. He looked like a professor always writing and drawing on the board. He drew some cartoon character pictures to explain Human's responsibility of bearing sons and daughters. He is correct. But I didn't know why he wrote "911" at first.

The second one was made by our senior classmate, Zumurod, who is good at cooking. We were summoned into the kitchen room where she had already prepared for making her dish. A lot of ingredients were spread on the table, including: flour, salt, sugar, oil, milk, nuts, seeds, sesame, cardamom, and dats(?) which was very famous in her homeland.

After introducing the materials and steps, she began her show.

A few minutes later, a plate of golden colour cake was served. It was delicious.

Triangle of Fear

The Vagabond, a 20-foot boat, rocked silently in the waves. On July 6th, 1969, a Swedish crew found the Vagabond in the water of the Bermuda Triangle. Several crew members boarded the boat and found the logbook. It had last been written in on July 2nd. Everything on board was in place, but there was no sign of the Vagabond's crew.

Nothing was ever found to explain what caused the Vagabond to be abandoned or what became of its crew. Many blame the Triangle for this unsolved disappearance.

A Lost Ship

The Bermuda Triangle covers hundreds of miles of the Atlantic Ocean. Its boundaries are formed by lines that run from the island of Bermuda, to Florida, and to the West Indies.

The Bermuda Triangle seems to have strange powers. Most ships and planes cross the Triangle safely. But over 1,000 people have disappeared in the Triangle. There are no clues. No one knows how or why it happens.

One of the most famous ships lost in the Bermuda Triangle was the Cyclops, a huge Navy coal ship. On March 13rd, 1918, it moved into the Bermuda Triangle. On board were 309 people.

The trip was going smoothly. The weather was clear. There were no storms in the area. The ship's radio was in working order. But somewhere inside the Bermuda Triangle, the ship and its crew disappeared. The giant Cyclops was never seen or heard from again. It never radioed for help.

The navy was surprised to learn the Cyclops was missing. Some thought it had blown up. Others thought it had hit something and sunk, Searchers thought they would find wreckage of the Cyclops. They searched for over a month but found nothing. The Cyclops and its passengers had vanished without a trace.

Into Thin Air

On December 5th, 1945, a group of five Navy planes took off from Florida. The pilots were on a regular training flight. It was called Flight 19. As the pilots flew into the Bermuda Triangle, everything seemed normal. For 3 hours and 25 minutes, they flew without problems. Several times they reported their position to the control tower. Each time the report seemed fine. But at 3:15 p.m., the flight leader sent out a strange message.

"Calling tower. This is an emergency. We seem to be off course. We cannot see land. Repeat. We cannot see land."

The tower radioed back, "What is your position?"
"We are not sure of our position. We seem to be lost. Everything is wrong. Even the ocean doesn't look as it should," said the flight leader.

The flight leader reported that they seemed to be 200 miles north east of Miami, Florida. That was the last message received by the tower from the Flight 19.

The Navy quickly sent out a large seaplane. Its job was to find the planes and rescue the pilots. One of the officers on the seaplane reported strong winds in the area where the missing plane had been. That was the last message received from the seaplane. Then it and its crew of 13 disappeared as well.

The Navy sent out 250 planes, boat, and seaplanes to search the area. The search lasted for five days. But the searchers never found anything. They found no bodies, no sign of wreckage, and no oil spills on the water. Yet, 27 men and 6 planes had mysteriously vanished!

Beware of the Triangle

The Bermuda Triangle does not always cause the disappearance of travelers. Many people who have traveled in the Bermuda Triangle have reported some kind of trouble. But they have escaped without harm.

Two of the lucky ones were Betty and Warren Miller. In June 1975, they were flying their small plane through the Triangle. Suddenly, they were surrounded by yellow fog. They couldn't see a thing. Warren Miller tried to check his position. But all the instruments in the plane had stopped working. He tried the radio. It,too, was dead.

For two frightening hours, the Millers flew in circles looking for land. They didn't know where they were or which way they were doing. It didn't seem to matter where they went. The yellow fog stayed with them.

Finally, the fog lifted. All at once, the plane's instruments began working again. The radio also returned to Florida. They landed as quickly as they could. They asked mechanics at the airport to check their plane.

Mechanics found nothing wrong with any part of the plane. All the instruments were in fine shape. The Millers checked the weather report for that day. No one else had seen any kind of yellow fog.
"I just can't explain it," said Betty Miller. "It was very eerie."

Others who have escaped the Triangle tell the same kinds of stories. Some of these people have felt their ships pulled by an unseen force. Some have even strange bright lights.Their planes' instruments have stopped working. All of these people have lost radio contact with the outside world. All have felt in danger of being lost forever.

The unexplained disappearances continue. And there will probably be more reports from those who escape the Triangle. And still, no one really knows what goes on in this eerie part of the Atlantic Ocean.

HALLOWEEN 1517: LUTHER 2003

The movie starts off with Martin Luther trying to escape a severe storm. He promises to become a monk if God lets him live through the storm. He survives and becomes a monk.

He goes to Rome to deliver a priest's letters and sees how corrupt Rome has become. He buys an indulgence for his grandfather, Hendrick Luther. He is told, "Hendrick will be released from Purgatory and into the gate of heaven." He realizes that things shouldn't be this way and goes back to Germany to talk to the priest. The priest sends him to Wittenberg to do a doctorate in the theology. The priest believes that Martin will be able to "change minds and open eyes" in Wittenberg. Martin often goes to confession and becomes really aggravated with himself. He makes the society to perceive things differently. He lectures in his theology class and makes fun of indulgences and the money that the Prince Frederick collects. The Prince's secretary, Spalatin, warns Luther that he should stop embarrassing the Prince because he is the one paying for him at the University.

After seeing the effects of the preaching of John Tetzel, Martin Luther comes up with the 95 Theses and nails them onto the door of the church on Hallow 1517. Bystanders take the theses and use a printing press to turn them into books. This allows everyone to have a copy, and his ideas spread faster and easier. Pope Leo X thinks that Martin is a drunken German monk who will change his ideas when he becomes sober. Spalatin tells Luther that he is threatened with excommunication and is summoned to appear in Augsburg by Rome. Aleander prepares Martin and tells him that all he should say in front of Cardinal Cajetan is that he recants but Martin doesn't follow through. Pope Leo X orders Martin's books to be burned and Luther is excommunicated. Then, Martin translates the New Testament into German because he believes that the common people need to be able to understand the scriptures. In Worms,  Martin is given a hearing and when he is asked if he will recant, he asks for one day to ponder his answer. That night he goes to confession. The next day he refuses to recant. The Cardinal demands that Martin be delivered to Rome, but Prince Frederick doesn't want that, so he kidnaps Luther and keeps him in Wartburg Castle.

When Luther disappears, chaos occurs. The people start to break down the church, and set it on fire. Luther disguises himself as a knight, and goes and stops the people from ruining the church. He finishes translating the New Testament into German and dedicates it to Prince Frederick. He meets a nun named Katharina von Bora and marries her. Pope Leo X dies, 800,000 ducats in debt. The Emperor Charles calls upon all the princes to settle what began at Worms. Luther encourages the princes to speak. He says, "Silence will not save us." All the princes stand up against Charles. Martin was successful.

As a kid, I always liked Halloween. I liked dressing up in a costume that I pick out at the store or, more often, we made out of odds and ends at home. The best part was going trick-or-treating. Some years, I went with my brothers and sisters. When I got a little older, I went with my friends. We would go to the houses in our neighborhood and knock or ring the doorbell. When the door opened, we would yell, "Trick or treat!‚" We never played tricks and always got treats. The neighbor would put some candy and chocolate bars in our bags. We would go home at the end of the night and eat them to our hearts' content.
To get ready for Halloween, my parents would buy pumpkins from the market or from the make-shift pumpkin patches on the side of the road so that we could make jack-o- lanterns. We took each pumpkin and cut off the top, scooped out the seeds from the inside, and carved faces on the front. At night, we would put candles inside the jack-o- lanterns and put them on our doorstep. Sometimes we carved scary faces and sometimes they were funny ones.
I remember that one year, we had a Halloween party. Our friends came over dressed up as witches, ghosts, superheros, cartoon characters, and anything else you can think of. We would play party games like bobbing for apples, and we even created a haunted house in our backyard. It was a blast! Halloween is truly a holiday for kids.

FREE CONCERT IN FOUR SEASON CENTRE

It was still at Sheppard_Yonge Subway Station, but it was at 10:00 am, We set off southbound. It was very coincidenceful, we happened to meet our alumnus, Norman, who had studied in MicroSkills LINC.

We walked through the Eaton Shopping Centre. Mr. Joseph talked about the concert.

Took picture with classmate of level 1 and Norman

All of us, except Joseph who held the camera, made a picture.

In front of the Old City Hall

Mr. Joseph explained the antique on the side of street.

                                                       Lined up, Q for entering.

The big sign of the Four Seasons Centre on the wall.

Norman was looking at his school, George Brown College, over there.

We finally entered the concert. Whose back? Back it up!

                                                               Long glass stairs.

Too many people came early. Many seats were reserved before.

Yellow-green maple leaves, viewed from plaza.

We had to stand along the path.

The performance began.

Inviting Your Boss to a Concert

1
A: Mr. Thiru, I was wondering if you and your wife had plans for next Friday night?
B: Yes, I think we might be free. What did you have in mind?
A: I've mailed a formal written invitation to your home inviting you to a concert at Roy Thomson Hall.
B: That sounds great. Is it casual?
A: Actually, we thought it would be fun to have a pre-Christmas get-together for the concert.
B: That sounds good. It will give my wife a chance to dress up.
A: Yes, we've invited four other couples, so it should be a good mix of people.
B: That sounds wonderful. Will there be anyone there that I know?
A: Oh yes, everyone we are inviting is from our company.
B: Great! I'll look forward to it. we'll make sure and check the mail for our invitation.

2
A: Mr. Thiru, would you and your wife be free next Friday night?
B: I don't think we have any plans, but I would need to see what my wife has planned, why?
A: My wife mailed a written invitation to your wife asking you both to join us at a concert.
B: It would be our pleasure to join you for an evening. What type of concert is it?
A: We've always wanted to watch the TSO play their winter holiday classics.
B: I think we would enjoy that, especially our wives!
A: Four other couples are coming, so I'm hoping some interesting conversation.
B: I am sure we will have a great time. Will some of the couples be from our company?
A: Yes, you will know all of our guests
B: I'll make sure to check the mail for our invitation. Your concert plans sound wonderful.

3
A:Would you and your wife be available next Friday night, Mr, Thiru?
B: I'll have to check with my wife, of course. Did you have something planned?
A: We are planning to attend a concert, and my wife sent you and your wife an invitation.
B: I think we would enjoy that. Is it a formal affair?
A: My wife insisted on going to a concert this time.
B: That would be a change. Usually we just do barbeques and never get a chance to dress up.
A: We thought that inviting four other couples would make nice conversation.
B: I think we will enjoy being there. Will we know anyone?
A: We are only inviting people from work.
B: I am sure that a good time will be had by everyone. We will be looking for your invitation.

SOME CAR LOGOS

We can also call a car as vehicle, motor, automobile.

There are 3 major kind of vehicles. Otherwise there are 2 kind of elite models.

They are SUV!

They are SUV too.

These are made in Germany. They are strong brands and have excellent quality.
Every man enjoys having a Benz. In Singapore, we call it "马赛地"(Ma-Sai-Di). But more women like BMW. Benz and BMW are top products in quality, character and technology. I give them 5 stars. Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche and Skoda are made by the same company.

The first row's brands are made in UK. Rolls_Royce and Bentley are the most expensive products.
The second rows are made in Italy. Well known!
Volvo is made in Sweden. It is a good brand and 1s very safe for passengers.
Peugeot and Renault are made in France. They are normal, just so so.

These are made in Japan. Honda and Acura, Toyota and Lexus, Nissan and Infinity are in same company. They give another name for their high level products.
In Singapore, we name Subaru as  "速霸路". It has special technology in engine.
Although many people in Canada drive Japanese cars and although these products are of good quality,
I don't like them at all.

There are three bigger car factories in America. They supply varied brands, models and levels products.

I searched in Google, and find a Canadian's brand.
But I never still see it in street yet.

  1. It is very inconvenient to be without a car in Canada. Some of my classmates and friends have planned to purchase car recently. Do you know which one is better?

EDITING CHECKLIST V ----Check for the following:

Why the English fled Quebec--The untold story: Francophones continue driving English-speakers from Quebec while expanding French usage across Canada

Article Excerpt, BY PETER STOCK, adapted from http://goliath.ecnext.com/coms2/gi_0199-2978807/Why-the-English-fled-Quebec.html

Gloria McCullough used to work as a clerk in the claims section at Chubb and Sons, a national insurance company. In 1977, French-language police entered her office in Montreal. "I was told that I had to be tested. If I didn't pass, I had to take language lessons. If I failed to pass the French course, I'd lose my job. If I passed the first course, I'd be assigned another until my French was considered almost perfectly fluent." Precisely the same imposition was made on her husband Rick, who worked for a Montreal-area plumbing company.

In 1982, the young couple fled to Edmonton. Says Mr. McCullough, "People here think the Quebec language law is about signs being in French, not English. That's a joke. Do Canadians really think that several hundred thousand people left their native province over signs?"

Also not well understood by most citizens in English Canada is                                                                          . Among the major components are:

  1. Outside  Quebec, French rights have been asserted primacy in the public sector, meaning within the course, schools, police and other government institutions. The major thrusts pushing French-language expansion in English Canada are the Liberal Party and Federal bureaucracy.
  2. Within Quebec, the provincial public sector already consists almost entirely of native francophones (about 97%). French-language promotion in Quebec targets the private workplace, forcing Anglos and immigrants to function in French. Powering this strategy is the provincial government.
  3. Immigrants within Quebec are another crucial factor in the language struggle. The provincial government aggressively attempts to force their children to study in French. Behind that drive is the fact that Quebec's francophone have one of the lowest birth rates in the world.
There is a self-evident contradiction between Quebec's strategy to form a largely unilingual province and Ottawa's determination to create bilingualism (which means more French-language rights) across the country. Particularly noteworthy is Ottawa's failure to protect English-language rights in Quebec. The likeliest cause of that failure is the fear that Quebec voters will opt for separation if Ottawa is seen as a fundamental threat to French primacy in the province. Elsewhere in Canada, anglophones are less resistant to ongoing federal attempts to extend French usage within their communities.

"In Quebec, there has actually been a deliberate strategy to drive the English out," says Jim Kalasatidis, the president of the provincial Equality Party. "You cannot join the federal, provincial or municipal civil-services unless you speak fluent French."

"French is also a prerequisite for most jobs in the province sector [within Quebec], even when you do not need French to do the job," he  continues. "The law requires private businesses with 50 employee or more to obtain a Frenchization certificate. The language of the workplace must be French, even if you do your sales in English."
